Member Update

 Contract extension

At our September General membership meeting, the executive director of DC 37 along with his staff did a presentation regarding our benefits.
It was explained to the membership that our dental and prescription drug plan is facing a financial shortfall due to the out of control price gauging pharmaceutical companies are charging for their products.
Currently there are no laws prohibiting this practice. Our parent union is working with legislators to fix this problem, which is a tough battle with all the special interest groups fighting against it, but that’s another story.

With that being said, the city contributes $1500 a year to DC 37 for each member towards their benefits, the current cost to maintain this benefit is $1700.
In order for us to maintain our current benefits, our contract needs to extend by 2 months and 23 days to cover the shortfall.

This past Friday, triple AAA/ DC 37 sent out ballots for our members to vote yes or no on this proposal.

All other locals within DC 37 have already voted in favor of this proposal with the exceptions to the EMS unions.

While I can't tell you how to vote, we recommend a yes vote, or a second tier of lower benefits will be implemented to our members until our share of contributions are caught up.

DC 37 is currently in negotiations with the city on this issue, as this rate is subject to increase in the future as well.
Our demand is for higher contributions by the city towards our benefits.

Hope this helps.

Stay safe and happy holidays.
