“LABOR AND CLIMATE CHANGE”

On September 21st over 300,000 people marched through the streets of New York, and labor was present. The trade union movement will play a major role in this movement to save the planet, because of our strategic position in society. In order for the trade union movement to assume a leading role in the fight against climate change it has to be revitalized, refocused and reactivated. Preventing climate change will require the restructuring of our societies activities, which damage the earth and affect the climate. These activities must be reduced and renewable energy efficient activities must be implemented. Transitioning to a sustainable environment has its advantages. Some of these advantages include thousands of new jobs in public transportation, renewable energy, and house retrofitting. This behavior creates a sustainable industry and a better planet.

This Monday, September 1 will mark the 120th celebration of Labor Day as a national holiday. It is a celebration of the American Labor Movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers.

The United States labor movement is trying to reorient itself: last year at the 2013 national convention of AFL-CIO in Los Angeles marked the official launch of the new approach, best summarized in its Resolution 16 "Building Enduring Labor – Community Partnerships."
